On the Radio Afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts

چکیده

We use the cannonball (CB) model of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) to predict the spectral and temporal behaviour of their radio afterglows (AGs). A single simple expression describes the AGs at all times and frequencies; its high-frequency limit reproduces the successful CB model predictions for optical and X-ray AGs. We analyze all of the observed radio AGs of GRBs with known redshifts, including those of the exceptionally close-by GRB 980425. We also study in detail the time-evolution of the AGs’ spectral index. The agreement between theory and observations is excellent, even though the CB model is extremely frugal in the number of parameters required to explain the radio observations. We propose to use the scintillations in the radio AGs of GRBs to verify and measure the hyperluminal speed of their jetted CBs, whose apparent angular velocity is of the same order of magnitude as that of galactic pulsars, consistently measured directly, or via scintillations.

Title The radio afterglow from the giant flare of SGR 1900+14: The same mechanism as afterglows from classic gamma-ray bursts?

A radio afterglow was detected following the 1998 August 27 giant flare from the soft gamma repeater (SGR) 1900 14. Its short-lived behavior is quite different from the radio nebula of SGR 1806 20, but very similar to radio afterglows from classic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Motivated by this, we attempt to explain it with the external shock model as invoked in the standard theory of GRB afterglow...

Redshift indicators for gamma - ray bursts

— The measure of the distances and luminosities of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) led to the discovery that many GRB properties are strongly correlated with their intrinsic luminosity, leading to the construction of reliable luminosity indicators. These GRB luminosity indicators have quickly found applications, like the construction of 'pseudo-redshifts', or the measure of luminosity distances, which ...

The Energy of Long Duration Grbs

The energy release in gamma-ray bursts is one of the most useful clues on the nature of their “inner engines”. We show that, within the framework of the relativistic external shocks afterglow model, the narrowness of the observed X-ray luminosity of GRB afterglows, implies that the energy of the GRB jets after the early afterglow phase spans less than one order of magnitude. This result is not ...

Gamma-ray Burst Positions from the ASM on RXTE

The RXTE/ASM has detected and positioned 14 confirmed GRB bursts (at this writing, Jan. 1999) including six whose positions were comunicated to the community 2 to 32 hours after the burst. Two of these latter bursts led to measurements of optical red shifts but one, despite an easily detected x-ray afterglow, produced no detectable optical or radio afterglow.

γ-ray burst after-glow: Confirming the cosmological fireball model

The recent detection of delayed X-ray and optical emission, “afterglow,” associated with γ-ray bursts (GRBs) supports models, where the bursts are produced by relativistic expanding blastwaves, “fireballs,” at cosmological distances. The detection of absorption lines in the optical afterglow of the GRB of 8 May 1997 confirms that the sources lie at cosmological distance. We show here that the n...
